Complete Guide to Engineering Admissions 2026
Securing a good rank in JEE is only half the battle. The other half is smart counselling. The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) manages the allocation of over 50,000 seats across 114 institutes. Understanding how this algorithm works is crucial to avoid missing out on a seat you deserve.
The "Home State" Advantage Explained
NITs reserve 50% of their seats for students who passed their Class 12th exam from the state where the NIT is located. This is called the Home State (HS) Quota. The remaining 50% is for Other State (OS) candidates.
Example: A student from Tamil Nadu with AIR 40,000 might get NIT Trichy (Civil) under HS Quota, whereas an Other State student might need AIR 15,000 for the same seat.
Note: IITs and IIITs (mostly) do not have Home State Quotas; they are All India based.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Opening and Closing Rank?
Opening Rank (OR) is the rank of the first student admitted to a specific branch. Closing Rank (CR) is the rank of the last student admitted. If your rank falls between the OR and CR of previous years, you have a high chance of admission.
Do IITs accept JEE Main scores?
No. IIT admission is strictly based on JEE Advanced ranks. JEE Main is only a qualifying exam to appear for JEE Advanced. However, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs accept JEE Main scores.
Can I get NIT with 85 percentile?
For General Category, it is difficult to get a seat in NITs with 85 percentile (AIR ~2.2 Lakhs), except in North-Eastern NITs or spot rounds. However, for SC/ST categories, 85 percentile is a very good score for top NITs.
How accurate is this College Predictor?
Our tool uses the official JOSAA 2024 and 2025 cutoff data (Round 6). While cutoffs vary slightly every year depending on the number of candidates and paper difficulty, this data provides the most realistic probability estimate available.
